In the climate conscious world we live in today, many farmers like us are becoming increasingly aware of the adverse effects of the use of chemicals on both human health and the environment.

As part of our regenerative agriculture programme, we have been trialling the natural benefits of clover in our fields of newly planted trees, with the aim to reduce the need for herbicides and therefore to assist in our policy of sustainable Christmas tree farming.

So, what are the advantages of having clover in our Christmas tree fields?

Well, firstly, clover is a great nitrogen fixer. This means that it partners with beneficial bacteria to transform nitrogen gas that is in the air pockets in the soil, into stable organic compounds. As clover grows very quickly, once it is established, it can improve soil structure and health, and helps to maintain soil moisture and suppresses other weeds. This will not only reduce the need for herbicides, but will also allow our precious Christmas

Having said that, our Christmas trees responded a lot more positively to the wet weather than we did; they are looking healthy and in great shape, their rich, vibrant green colour looking better than ever!

A Summer of Sustainable Farming

As growers of Christmas trees, you may assume that the summer months are the quietest time for us. However, as a sustainable, environmentally conscious farm, we find ourselves to be just as busy, as we prune and shear every tree on our 500 - acre farm to ensure uniformity of growth and perfectly shaped Christmas trees for our customers.

Believe it or not, several trees have already been cut and left our farm, for use in TV productions and photo shoots across the UK. So, while many of us are still enjoying the summer holidays, here on the farm, Christmas has already begun!

Whilst harvesting is already underway, sustainability is always at the heart of what we do, notably, our ongoing policy of replanting around 50,000 trees per year. For every tree harvested, we plant at least two trees to ensure that production on our farm is sustainable.
